Forget everything you know (or think you know) about Frankenstein. Very little that has made its way into modern culture originates with the actual novel. There are no neckbolts, green skin, castles, and Igor is nowhere to be found. What IS here is a deeply affecting novel that raises questions about such compelling topics as the morality of scientific development and research, the human soul, and the discrimination and xenophobia present in even polite society. The novel has a back story as interesting as the novel itself and the life of young Mary Shelley, who wrote this when she was only nineteen, adds a fascinating context to a wonderful and timeless novel.
